Value-added key to record feed grain exports

The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) credits the value-added segment of feed grains for record exports.

USGC chief economist Michael Dwyer says 30 percent of overall production goes to foreign customers, with a 12 percent jump from 2015 to 2016.

“If you only look at the direct exports of grain as grain, you really don’t see the whole picture.  A lot of that grain also goes into the production of ethanol and DDG’s (as well as) beef, pork, and poultry.  So when you look at the corn equivalents of those products, you see a very different picture emerge.”

He tells Brownfield longer-term export trends are more favorable for products made from commodity corn, barley or sorghum than the grains themselves.

“Like ethanol, which has had a record year this year.  (the U.S.) booked about 1.35 billion gallons of ethanol exported into world markets.  That’s up more than 30 percent from last year and is a new record high.”

The U.S. exported more than 114 million metric tons of feed grains in all forms during the latest marketing year.
