6 BSD, associate body activists jailed in Barisal
Six leaders and activists of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and its associate bodies were sent to jail yesterday in a case filed over attacking law enforcers and hampering public safety in Barisal the day before.
They include Samajtantrik Chhatra Front central president Imran Habib and BSD member secretary of Barisal district unit Dr Manisha Chakrabarty.
On Thursday, the activists of BSD and its associate bodies brought out a procession in the city demanding that the authorities concerned allow battery-run three-wheelers to ply the city streets.
At least 15 activists were injured as police charged batons on their procession, they said. Police also detained six of them.
Police, however, said the protesters were demonstrating blocking a busy road in Judge Court area. When police asked them to leave, they swooped on the law enforcers, prompting police to exercise force.
Sub-inspector Nazrul Islam of Barisal Metropolitan Police filed the case against 66 protesters on Thursday.
The owners and drivers of battery-run auto-rickshaws have been demanding permission to operate on city roads for a long time. Recently, police seized over 100 such vehicles for violating the restriction. BSD demonstrated supporting the cause of battery-run three wheeler owners and drivers.
