T.W. Garner Food Company announced the company is recalling portions of its Texas Pete® Habanero Buffalo Sauce and Texas Pete® Sweet CHAbanero Sauce on Thursday.

Newsweek reached out to Garner via email Thursday night for comment.

Why It Matters

Numerous recalls have been initiated this year due to potentially damaged products, foodborne illness, undeclared food allergens or the potential of bacteria.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or food allergies every year. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine "major" food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

What To Know

Texas Pete® Habanero Buffalo Sauce is getting recalled due to the sauce possibly containing Sriracha Sauce. In an alert by the FDA, the Sriracha Sauce contains sulfites as a preservative, which is not listed on the Texas Pete Habanero Buffalo Sauce label.

People who consume the recalled product who have a sensitivity or allergy to sulfites may experiences serious to life-threatening reactions, the FDA warns.

The agency says that the Texas Pete® Sweet CHAbanero Sauce is recalled due to the label failing to disclose that the product contains red habanero peppers, salt and vinegar.

The products were distributed from February 5, 2025, to March 26, 2025, to retail stores and centers in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia and Vermont.

No illnesses have been reported as of Thursday, the FDA says.

The FDA alert also shows a chart of the impacted products with their corresponding lots, sizes and best-by dates. Pictures of the recalled sauces are also listed in the alert.

What People Are Saying

The FDA alert, in part: "The firm discovered during an internal quality testing of the products that bottles of Habanero Buffalo Sauce actually contained Sriracha Sauce. Upon review of the two labels, it was determined that the Habanero Buffalo Sauce may contain undeclared sulfites, since the Sriracha Sauce contains sodium bisulfite as a preservative. No illnesses have been reported to date."

What Happens Next

Customers who have purchased the recalled hot sauces are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a refund or throw them out.

Customers with additional questions may email the company at ContactUs@garnerfoods.com or call (336) 231-6417 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET weekdays.
