Wisconsin crops, harvesting slowed by cold, wet weather

Some Wisconsin farmers finished some fieldwork ahead of the cold and wet weekend weather.  USDA reporters say there were four days suitable for fieldwork last week.  Forty-one percent of the state reported surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture, and everywhere else had adequate moisture.

Several reporters say it was difficult to get equipment into fields, and there were reports of cows sinking in pastures while grazing.  In Rock County, there are reports of equipment getting stuck on hills, and water running from places it never has.

Forty-eight percent of corn for silage has been harvested, and corn for grain harvest is 3% finished.  Ninety-four percent of the corn is in the dough state, three weeks behind normal.

Seventy-eight percent of Wisconsin’s soybean plants are dropping leaves, and 15% of the crop has been harvested. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay is 71% finished.  The potato harvest is 72% finished.  Ninety-three percent of the oats are in the bin.
